I promised you Wagner and I’m delivering. I did watch the first 2 of 4 operas in the Ring Cycle. I decided that if movie stars were also Wagnerian opera stars, Jason Momoa would have to be Wotan. You can fight me on this, but I will win. Go ahead and push some lushes locks over one of his eyes and you’ll see it too. As for the rest of the characters, I haven’t decided what movie stars would suitably meet Wagner’s dramatic demands.
To my surprise, I did really enjoy Das Rheingold and Die Walkure. I’ve already decided I’m going to dress-up for Halloween exactly as Deborah Vogt’s version of Brunhilde in the 2011 Met Production even if that means me sitting alone in my house re-watching that version. I can sing “Hojoto” by myself, a capella in my living room without Wagner rolling over in his grave, right?
Anyway, I’m finding the story line is a compilation between The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones. I realize that this story came before both of those, but all good story tellers draw from something, so I highly recommend you go watch the Met’s version of The Ring Cycle. I hope to finish the next two operas before the end of the week. I’m heading to Houston on Friday to visit my brother. Maybe I will have come up with a few more movie star characters that visually fit the bill for Wagner’s epic.
